Friday Night Workshops in Studio
Zay el Hawa - Lebanese - style Choreography with Tamra Henna
Date: Friday, September 27, 2024
Time: 7:30 - 9:30pm CDT
Location: Dance by Carly, Studio A
Skill Level: All levels
Add a little “Pan-Arabic” flair to your dancing! Lebanese style is energetic, dynamic, and classic. The beautiful movements typical to Lebanese Raqs Sharqi are a refreshing change for dancers who have been more exposed to other styles of belly dance, and can be added to any dancer’s repertoire for extra spice and variation.
“Zay el Hawa,” first popularized by Egyptian crooner Abdel Halim Hafez, is a very popular Arabic standard. Often played for dance performances, it is a real crowd pleaser with Arab audiences. The version used for this choreography is from a recording by the late Setrak Sarkissian, a drummer and band leader who was extremely popular in Lebanon, and whose drumming style was a hallmark of the sound of Lebanese belly dancing music for decades.
In this class, students will learn the stylistic basics, a few classic Lebanese movements and steps, and several combinations showcasing these moves. We will put it all together into a fun dance! Bonus: we will discuss breaking down music to create choreographies, and how the concepts of repetition and variation make both choreographing and learning choreographies easier!

Bang a Gong - How to DANCE with Your Finger Cymbals with Tamra Henna
Date: Saturday, September 28, 2024
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm CDT
Location: Austin Ecstatic Dance Center
Skill Level: All Levels
This movement-oriented class focuses on how to transition from playing finger cymbals to dancing with your finger cymbals. Many dancers are intimidated by the multi-tasking required to DANCE while playing. In this class, we will work on forging the neural pathways needed to move and play at the same time, including some hints to make playing while dancing easier.
This class will include:
Basic patterns - using the numerical system of 1, 3, 5, 7, and rolls, we’ll practice some basic patterns you can use with most music.
Layering of footwork with patterns
We’ll confuse our brains with some basic steps done with different patterns. This block gets tricky, but it’s a really great brain teaser!
“Cheats” - movement and zill pattern combos that are easy and eye/ear catching. Get the audience’s attention without working too hard!
Music discussion - when to play and when NOT to play in the music.
When to be simple and when to be fancy with your pattern selections.
The much-maligned 3s - why it’s perfectly OK to play 3s! How to make your simplest patterns sound fire!
How to vary the sound of your cymbals to add musical dynamics to simple playing.
The goal of this class is to de-mystify and de-stress finger cymbal playing. Any time a dancer starts playing their cymbals, it brings another layer to the performance and draws attention! By the end of this class, students will feel inspired and freed to explore finger cymbal playing in their own performances.
