Biography for Amara

Dr Laura (Amara) Osweiler is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, producer, scholar and access advocate from the USA now in Sydney, on Cammeraygal country. As a Classic American belly dancer and MENAHT folk dancer for 30 years, she has performed internationally as a soloist and in dance companies. As a leading innovator in Intercultural Middle Eastern dance, Laura’s works have been presented at numerous events and on video. For fifteen years, Laura was the Director and Choreographer of Ya Helewa!. Amara has taught accredited university courses and regularly teaches dance, health and teacher training workshops at festivals and online. Amara has produced numerous dance concerts and festivals including EEMED, X-MED and The ABDC and was General Manager at Critical Path, Australia’s leading centre for choreographic enquiry, research and development. For over 6 years, Amara has trained in access and inclusion and is now an access consultant supporting other artists with disability and developing action plans for organizations and governments. Amara holds a PhD in Dance History and Theory from UC Riverside and a BA in Music History and Literature and a certificate in Ethnomusicology from The Florida State University and worked on an MA in Dance Ethnography and MFA in Dance Performance at UCLA.
